Our Referee Scheme is a pupil leadership opportunity open to children in Years 5 and 6, designed to promote fairness, responsibility and positive behaviour during football at playtimes and lunchtimes. The scheme was introduced in response to the competitive nature of football and the need to ensure that games are safe, inclusive and enjoyable for all pupils.
Pupils apply for the role and are selected through a competitive application process, recognising that being a referee is a position of trust and responsibility. Successful candidates take part in bespoke referee training delivered in partnership with Wiltshire FA, giving pupils a clear understanding of the rules of the game as well as strategies for managing disagreements, communicating decisions confidently and remaining calm under pressure.
Referees wear identifying T-shirts, carry their own set of red and yellow cards and work in pairs during playtimes and lunchtimes, supporting one another and acting as positive role models on the playground. They are encouraged to reflect on their decisions and continuously develop their skills, with support from staff throughout the year.
Since the introduction of the Referee Scheme, we have seen a significant improvement in attitudes towards football across the school. Incidents of negative behaviour linked to football have reduced substantially, with pupils showing greater respect for rules, improved sportsmanship and a more positive approach to resolving disagreements.
The Referee Scheme strongly supports the teaching of British Values, particularly the rule of law, mutual respect and individual liberty. Pupils learn the importance of applying rules fairly and consistently, respecting decisions even in competitive situations, and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and enjoy the game.
As a leadership role, the scheme provides a valuable opportunity for pupils to develop confidence, communication skills and resilience. Referees must make decisions in real-time, explain them clearly to their peers and demonstrate integrity and fairness at all times.
Through their role, pupil referees live out our school values by showing wisdom in applying rules thoughtfully, aspiration in taking on a challenging leadership role, respect for others during competitive play, and community by helping to create a calmer, happier and more positive playground environment for everyone.
