The History Graduate Award Scheme is your opportunity to deepen your knowledge and explore history beyond the classroom.

In order to become a history graduate, you will need to

  • Write a 500-word essay answering one of the questions below
  • Take the online quiz

Essay

Choose a question from the list and write an essay about it, aiming for it to be around 500 words. You will need to research the area of history that it is based on in order to form your own answer to the question and then write up your ideas, including evidence from what you have found out.

This essay can be written by hand or on a computer/iPad. If you are struggling for a device at home, you are welcome to use one at school.

An example structure of the essay could be:

  • Introduction - stating your point of view with a summary of your main evidence
  • 4-5 paragraphs - each one based on a different point to answer the question
  • Conclusion - stating your final answer to the question

Your essay should include:

  • Your opinion backed up by history facts
  • Key dates and time periods involved
  • Any important people involved in the specific period
Essay options:
  • What was life like for children in Victorian Britain?
  • Why did America fight for independence in 1775?
  • Why was the Mayan Empire so successful?
  • What impact did the British Empire have on India?
  • What’s so important about the Magna Carta?
  • What led to the abolition of the slave trade in Britain in 1807?
