  • Reception Class 2019 - Parental Information

Mon 29 Apr 2019 Mr. Martindale

This information is intended for parents who have been offered and have accepted a place for their child for September 2019. Until we have been advised of the final list of children for September 2019, we will not be sending out personalised letters.

Wednesday 19th June 2019 6-7.30pm, Information Evening for Parents: You are invited to join myself and Miss Murphy for an overview of life in Reception Class at St. Peter’s. We will cover everything from logistics to learning. Governors, our PTA (The Friends of St. Peter’s) and other staff (including the school SENCo) will also be in attendance. There will be an opportunity for you to chat to them and have a look around the school, as well as sample some of the school meals. Please note that you should not bring children to this event. The gate between the playground and Xanten Way will be open on the Evening so please make your way across the playground to the Reception Classroom. Signs will be up to help you find your way.

Monday 1st July 2019 1-2pm, Stay and Play: During this session, you are invited to stay with your child and explore the Reception classroom and outdoor area. Our Year 4 children will also take you and your child on a tour of the school while it is fully operational! Please arrive at the office reception. Parking is available next to the school on Xanten Way.

Thursday 11th July 2019 1-2pm, Leave and Play: Miss Murphy and Miss Lever (our Early Years Teaching Assistant) will spend an hour with your children. They will enjoy a number of story books, sing some songs and play some games. Please arrive at the office reception. There will be a space for you to have a cup of tea on site but away from your child. As ever, parking is available next to the school on Xanten Way.

Friday 12th July 2019 3-5pm, Summer Fete and Teddy Bears Picnic: The whole school community will be enjoying the joys of summer at our first ever school fete. You are part of the school community now and we would love to see you there. As well as the stalls and games being run, there will be a Teddy Bears Picnic especially for the children joining us in September.

Additionally, Miss Murphy and Miss Lever will be making home visits during the mornings of 22nd, 23rd and 25th July. These are not compulsory. Indeed, after multiple visits to the school, you may feel that your child is ready to start. However, we appreciate that some children may benefit from the opportunity so please contact the school directly should you wish to arrange a home visit.

The school will shortly be making contact with your child’s current nursery to further complement and ease their transition into Reception Class.

Monday 2nd September and Tuesday 3rd September 2019 are inset days. We are closed to pupils. Your child’s first day of school will be Wednesday 4th September. They will be full time from that date. We ran the same transition programme last year and although it tired them out, all the children coped well with the shift to being a full-time pupil from the beginning.

Miss Murphy, Miss Lever and I all look forward to meeting with you at one of the many open days and transition opportunities. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact our school office.

  • Prospective Parents Open Evenings - 1st October 2018 and 12th November 2018

Fri 14 Sep 2018 Mr. Martindale

    Dear Parents/Carers,

With the application window for school places wide open, the staff at St. Peter’s would like to invite prospective parents of children entering Reception Class in September 2019 to either one of two open evenings, which will take place in our school hall at 6pm on each of the above dates.

Miss Murphy (our EYFS teacher) and I will spend time talking about the Early Years curriculum at St. Peter’s, logistics of school life, our expectations for home learning and, most importantly, how we ensure a smooth transition for your child into life at primary school. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Early Years Classroom; take a tour of our school and ask questions.

For those of you driving to the event, please be aware that our nursery will be in operation until 6pm. We invite you to park in any available space between the main gate and the disabled parking spots but all other spaces should be reserved for parents picking up from nursery. Entry to the school hall will be clearly marked regardless of where you enter the school site. For in-year applications, please contact the school office separately.

    Yours faithfully,

    Mr. Martindale

  • St. Peter's Information session for new parents - 18th June

    Thu 24 May 2018 O. Martindale

Parents of children in next year's Reception Class have already been invited to an information session on 18th June from 6pm-7pm at St. Peter's School.

Over the coming weeks, offers for Years 1 to 4 will be made. The nature of the admissions process for these year groups is far more staggered. Unlike National Offer day (when all children find out at the same time), in-year transfers and offers may occur on a daily basis. For this reason, the school won't be sending out individual invitations to parents in Year 1 to 4. Instead, once you have confirmation of a place at St. Peter's, take that as an invitation to join us at the information session.

The information shared will focus on a few key areas:

    • The school day (where to be and when!)
    • Key people at the school (who to contact)
    • The curriculum
    • Ongoing parental and community engagement
    • Ideas for the summer holiday

Additionally you will have a chance to meet some of the teachers and support staff at the school. Due to furniture constraints, this event is for parents only; no children on this occasion.

I look forward to seeing you there,

    O. Martindale

    Headteacher

  • St Peter's building work is 'right on track'

Fri 04 May 2018 Spire fm

Ollie Martindale will lead St Peter's C of E Primary Academy when it opens up on the new estate at the top of Devizes Road.

He's only been in post officially for a couple of weeks and has told Spire FM he's 'excited' about what the future holds.

"It is exciting, from the building, to the staff, to the children, to the curriculum. What's brilliant is that we get to put our mark on absolutely everything."

The building work's been ongoing for a few months now and Mr Martindale has told Spire FM things are right on track:

"Touch wood, we are ahead of schedule on pretty much everything. The outside of the building's done, inside the plastering's done, the carpets are about to go down, the wiring's in, so it really is just the fixtures and fittings. I don't want to jinx anything by giving you a date, but we're looking good for something before the summer holidays."

Once completed, St Peter's will have 14 classrooms and plenty of other facilities, such as an assembly hall, drama studio, cookery room, sports field and a multi-use games area.

The school will eventually be surrounded by 1,500 houses as part of the new St Peter's Place estate, and Ollie says that means it's important that they're a strong part of the area they're in:

"Having personally lived on two new build estates, the school has to be at the centre of the community. There are groups that exist already and the school has representatives on those, so as the community grows, the school will grow and vice versa."

The school says the response to their opening has been great, and demand for pupil places and staff roles is going really well.

    Staffing update

We are delighted to advise you that we have now recruited the full teaching team for St Peter’s CE Primary Academy for this September. We were overwhelmed by the response to our adverts with us receiving over 40 applications! The three recruited are outstanding teachers and have such a lot to offer St Peter’s.

In addition to myself as Headteacher, I am pleased to introduce Harriet Morris (Senior teacher and class teacher), Robyn Murphy and Becka Thomas (class teachers). The new team are really looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible at the planned Open Event on Thursday 5th April.

    With kind regards,

    O Martindale

    Ollie Martindale
    Headteacher

    Mrs. Harriet Morris

Mrs. Morris has a passion for literature, she studied English Literature at University where she could indulge her love of books. Following a period of travelling around the world, she achieved her Post Graduate Certificate in Education in 2011. She is currently a Senior leader and class teacher of a London school where the leadership team were recently rated by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ and before that has worked in both the private and public education sectors. Although Mrs Morris has primarily taught within Key Stage 2, she has a wealth of experience of leading interventions, curriculum planning, moderation sessions and creating cohesive assessment systems within all key stages including EYFS and KS1.

Mrs Morris is relocating to Salisbury in the summer and says what an exciting opportunity this is for her. She cannot wait to be part of the team and see the school come to life and flourish!

    Miss Robyn Murphy

Miss Murphy started her career in 2005 when she studied for a Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Childcare and Early Years. She continued her studies at Winchester University where she obtained a BA (Hons) in Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status and an SEN specialism. Miss Murphy has been teaching for 7 years and began her career in a Reception class. She has now taught across all age ranges and has experienced three Ofsted inspections, all with positive feedback on her teaching. She has high expectations for herself, and also for the learning within her classroom.

Becoming part of St. Peter’s CE Primary Academy particularly appealed to her as she is aware that she will be joining the school at a very exciting time and has a shared enthusiasm regarding being able to shape the education of the local children and community from scratch.

Miss Murphy was pleased to see that DSAT’s core Christian values are based on love, grace and joy as she believes this is paramount to a successful learning environment and has been working alongside these morals throughout her current teaching career; having worked previously in two church schools. She was encouraged to hear that she could do this alongside a team of professionals, who are compassionate, welcoming and highly motivated because these are three values that she considers herself to uphold – professionally and personally.

Lastly, Miss Murphy says that every day she enters her classroom, she has the goal of giving the children in her class the best education possible.

    Miss Becka Thomas

Miss Thomas completed her BA Honours in Education Studies in 2014. She then spent a year teaching drama and working with children with special educational needs before starting her PGCE at Bath Spa University. She has been teaching for the last 2 years and says that the best part of her role as a primary teacher has been watching the children grow and flourish. She is passionate about drama and the arts and this is something she will want to focus on when inspiring and motivating pupils. Miss Thomas loves the theatre, regularly going to London to watch musical productions. She will be looking at how she can build in wonderful opportunities for the children to see live theatre as part of the curriculum.

Miss Thomas is very excited to be joining the St Peter’s team. It is her passion to continue being an outstanding teacher and to further her understanding and commitment to children with SEND, as this will allow all of our pupils to aspire and achieve. She is looking forward to contributing to the future of St. Peter’s as the school grows and develops.
